Cultural Heritage - Introduction
Since 1998 cultural cooperation between Ghana and the Netherlands has initiated a series of important activities and projects regarding the conservation, revitalisation and development of the shared heritage. The main focus has become the restoration of forts and castles along the Gold Coast. These activities were intended to promote cultural cooperation and public awareness and were included in broader programmes such as the Elmina Cultural Heritage and Management Programme and the 300 years of diplomatic relations celebrations of 2001-2002, when the Cultural Framework Treaty was signed. The recent publication of the Ghana source guide by the National Archives is an important springboard for further disclosure of relevant documentation on the mutual history of Ghana and the Netherlands. Therefore all projects aiming to catalogue, publish and digitalise archival sources should be stimulated, in the Netherlands and particularly in Ghana. To facilitate the investigation, the organisation of an intensive Dutch course for people in this field and the publication of sources in English would be desirable. The preservation of intangible heritage is also perceived as a priority by those involved in Ghana.
